So *she asks curiously* since my last blog how has the “following-up” been going? Just take a moment to think –
- Have you rung the people who you said you would ring?
- Have you put a date in the diary to meet them?
- Have you had a meeting with them?
- OR??? Are their cards still on your desk OR in your in-box OR under your coffee cup OR filed away somewhere tidy?
Now is such a great time of year to meet with people, make new contacts – it is notoriously a quietish time of the year when “everyone else” (everyone??? I hear you ask) yes – everyone else is on holiday so a good time to treat yourself and meet with new people and make some new contacts.
Take some time out and find all those Business Cards which are hanging around and make an effort to either follow them up or chuck them out! I believe that if you don’t follow them up, within say a month, you can’t really claim to having just met them. Most people will have forgotten who you are, especially if you go to a lot of different networking groups. It is always best to mail or phone people within the first week of meeting them. A gentle email stating where you met them, and if you would like to meet again or maybe forwarding them something that would be of interest to them.
Let me know how you get on with those cards and maybe count how many you have and how many you have to chuck out because they are “past their sell by date”! It is such an upsetting realisation that you met these wonderful people but have just not bothered to get in touch. We all know that networking is not all about the meetings but the follow-up afterwards.
DO IT NOW and then let me know how it went?
